Dasuya bypoll: Development is the winner

Sukhjit Kaur Sahi (BJP+Akali) defeats Congress candidate by nearly 50,000 votes in peaceful bypoll elections with 69.7% voter turnout!!!

CHANDIGARH/DASUYA: The Bhartiya Janata Party today retained the Dasuya assembly segment with its candidate Sukhjeet Kaur Sahi defeating the Congress candidate Arun Mickey Dogra by a huge margin of about 47,432 votes. The Peoples’ Party of Punjab candidate, Bhupinder Singh Ghuman remained a distant third and lost his security deposit.

 

Sahi was polled 74,484 votes while Mickey Dogra was polled 30,000 votes. PPP Candidate Ghuman was polled 5,149 votes.

 

Nevertheless the BJP victory in the by-election was expected however the huge victory margin came as a bit surprise. The by-election had been necessitated by the death of the sitting BJP candidate and the Chief Parliamentary Secretary Amarjit Singh Sahi. The BJP fielded his wife Sukhjeet Kaur who won by a hugely comfortable margin.

 

While the victory may not have come as a surprise to the Congress, but the margin of defeat must have certainly come as a great shock. This is supposed to be a traditionally Congress belt and the party was not expected to fair that badly.

 

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh had personally taken much interest about the by-election and spent three days for campaigning. He was scheduled to spend more but had to take off sometime because of the death of his aunt Ms Nagindra Khanna, the mother of PCC general secretary Arvind Khanna.

 

Capt Amarinder had ensured the return of Mukerian MLA Rajneesh Bubby to the party fold before the Dasuya by-election as the constituency had about 25000 votes belonging to the Chang community which mostly goes with Rajneesh Bubby’s family. Bubby is the son of Congress veteran late Dr Kewal Krishen who belonged to the same community.

 

The Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal also spent considerable time in Dasuya during the campaigning. At one stage it looked more of an Akali than the BJP campaign as the BJP leaders campaigning in the area were overshadowed by the presence of two Badals and Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, another important leader of the SAD and the ruling family.

 

Most of all the main person responsible for such a humiliating defeat is the Congress candidate Arun Dogra himself who virtually took no interest in the campaigning. He had taken defeat for granted as was noted and felt by the Congress leadership which went for campaigning in the area.

 

His miserably poor performance should make the party give a serious thought of grooming alternative leadership so that the candidate who is fielded next time in 2017 is well entrenched in the area and has a will and determination to win.

Iconic wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh passes away

MUMBAI 12 July, 2012: Legendary wrestler and actor Dara Singh passed away at his Mumbai home early on Thursday. He was 83.

Dara Singh, who was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital last week after a cardiac arrest, was taken back to his home on Wednesday night after his condition failed to improve despite continuous medical effort. Doctors, on Wednesday, had said that chances of Dara Singh's recovery were poor.

Doctors said that Dara Singh had suffered significant brain damage after the cardiac arrest.
He had appeared in films like "Watan Se Door", "Daada", "Rustom-E-Baghdad", "Sher Dil", "Sikandar E Azam", "Raaka", "Mera Naam Joker" and "Dharam Karam". He was last seen in the 2007 release "Jab We Met".

World champion wrestler Dara Singh, who joined the film industry in 1960s, was last seen in 2007 movie 'Jab We Met' alongside Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor.

‘Mahabali’ Dara Singh was the undisputed champion of champions in the wrestling ring and has won many times including the world championship in 1968.

He took to acting in 1962 and is best remembered for his portrayal of Hanuman in popular TV series ‘Ramayan’.

Dara Singh, who was a Rajya Sabha member from August 2003 to 2009, was best remembered for his iconic role as 'Hanuman' in the epic TV serial 'Ramayan'.

He had also directed films.

Dara Singh was also known for his generous kind nature. Affable to the extreme, he made friends easily and never misused his power even in his heydays.

He was a gentleman. India has a lost a jewel today.

'Uranium in Punjab water 50% more than WHO limit'

CHANDIGARH: The Centre has finally taken cognizance of the severity of uranium contamination in Punjab's water and has acknowledged that it is the only state in the country which is reeling under this unique and dangerous problem.
The uranium content in the waters of Punjab has not only been increasing but spreading too. A recent study by Punjab health department has revealed that uranium content has been found to be 50% above the permissible WHO limit in eight districts of the state.
Earlier, only two districts -- Faridkot and Ferozepur -- had reported uranium in their water and the related health problems. Union minister for rural development and panchayats Jairam Ramesh admitted on Friday that Punjab was the only state in the country where uranium content in the water is higher than the permissible limit set by the WHO. While announcing a state-of-the-art lab with the assistance of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, to detect the presence of uranium and heavy metals in water, Ramesh said the water situation in Punjab was really bad.
"We need more scientific studies to understand the implications on health of people consuming this uranium contaminated water. We need to know the source of uranium's presence which is very unusual and inexplicable. As of now, we have only theories, we need to know the facts," said Ramesh.
Laying the foundation stone of the Rs 4 crore laboratory at Mohali, he said it would be operational in the next six to eight months.
Apart from detecting uranium pollution, Ramesh said that his focus is on supplying 'safe' water for all the households getting only contaminated supply now. As per state government's survey, out of total 2,462 water samples, 1,140 samples tested positive for the radioactive metal. Water contaminated with uranium was found in Malwa districts of the state, including Mansa, Bathinda, Moga, Faridkot, Barnala, Sangrur and some parts of Ludhiana as well.
Though there had not been any indepth study on uranium contaminated water in Punjab, he said one reason could be the presence of phosphatic fertilizers in the soil that trigger uranium content in affected areas.

Yet to be launched, Maruti Cervo is a 5-door hatch-back model, with a decent luggage box and spacious cabin. It has 4 speed automatic transmission system, and its advanced variable valve timing technology will ensure overall engine efficiency. The car sports a spacious and comfortable interior, with a nice boot space. Steering wheel will be three spooked, and dashboard will comprise of AC vents from both sides, similar to the Maruti Swift, along with a storage box.
Maruti Cervo booking will perhaps start soon. Though, the number of variants on offer is yet to be confirmed. It is expected to be priced between Rs. 1.5 to 2 lakhs (ex showroom price).

Maruti, which has been mesmerizing many by its additions to list of cars, has now announced the launch of Maruti Cervo 2012 for Diwali. The phenomenal thing about the Maruti Cervo 2012 is that it is the replacement of the iconic Maruti 800.
Economic Times reports that the Maruti Cervo 2012 will be launched on Diwali and will be available for a price tag of Rs. 2-2.5 lakh. Officials from Maruti announced that the works on the car are still be carried and will be ready before Diwali.
The Maruti Cervo 2012 is smaller than the Chevrolet Beat with cues from Honda Jazz’s design. The highlighting feature of the Maruti Cervo 2012 is the fuel efficiency. The 2012 version of the car is will be powered by Suzuki’s 660cc engine, which is lower than the Nano (623CC) but priced higher than the Tata Nano.
The dashboard of the new Cervo looks similar to that of the Maruti Swift with rectangular air vents in the centre and the circular ones on the sides.

The disappointing thing about the new Cervo 2012 is that, an official from the company said that the car might not look like that of the picture.

Dara Singh Not Dead But Still Critical; Dharmendra Asks People to Pray for Him

Mumbai, 11 July 2012 - Dara Singh, a wrestler-turned-actor, is still in critical condition after suffering from a severe cardiac arrest on Saturday.

Several Bollywood celebrities including director and choreographer Farah Khan, actors Om Puri, Raza Murad and Dharmendra paid a visit to the hospital to meet Singh's family.

"I didn't want to see him lying down in a stateless. I want to remember Dara uncle as a robust fighter, healthy and strong. So, I didn't go inside to see him but I met his family and came back," Farah Khan told reporters outside the hospital.

Dharmendra, who met the ailing Singh on Wednesday, asked everyone to pray for his health and a quick recovery.
"He is my darling brother ...please pray for him. Doctors are trying their best, but let's all pray for him," Dharmendra told the media.
Tina Ambani, actress and Chairperson of the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital, also met Singh's family on Monday, and assured Vindu that the doctors are trying their best to help Singh battle with his condition.
Meanwhile, some media channels reported that the ailing actor passed away on Monday. News of his alleged death quickly hit the social media, with people posting condolence messages on Twitter and Facebook.
Shocked by the false report of his father's death, Vindu thrashed the rumor and said, "There is slight improvement in his condition and please it's a request till the time he is alive please don't kill him and pray for him. We can see that he is fighting from inside."
Dr Ram Narain, COO of the hospital, also refuted the rumor that Singh is dead.
"Dara Singh is not dead. These are all rumors. He is on ventilator and needs high dosage of oxygen. His kidneys are not working," Narain told an entertainment website.
"Dara's entire family is here. Vindu has accepted the fact that his father is 84. He knows his condition and has understood the situation. We just hope that he gets better with passing time," he added.
